CUNY Hires a Dirty Inspector Episode 2

By Cory Wright

The critical repair work taking place in the boiler room is being financed on the college budget.  Keep in mind that just months prior significant upgrade work that was actually a cover up for incompetence was just completed, specifically boiler retubing.  All the college Vice Presidents are kept in the loop as funding approvals are needed.   But these same VPs did not communicate with The CUNY Central Office.  Since I was directed to not have communication with Central Office by my VPs, logically it would make sense for me to remain consistent.  I was told that my communication was inappropriate when in truth my subject matter was accountability which is the “F” word in CUNY.  Matter of fact it is the “N” word let’s not water it down.  Central Office found out about the boiler incident via a cease to operate notice they received in the mail from Dept. of Buildings.  Notices such as these blind side folks that built fragile reputations, after years of consistent failures. Canal Street Coach bags. These notices are like paparazzi catching you with your side chick while your pregnant wife is in labor.  They will pay for these issues to go away.  Despite me informing my VPs in detail in writing and verbally, they are unable or maybe unwilling to communicate the present/past conditions, the status and/or the resolutions within the college that remedy the incidents.  Some people would find this inability to communicate troublesome, but if you are not a resident of sound leadership and accountability this would fly over your head.  Please revisit Episode One of this blog and bear witness to the allergic reactions to leadership and accountability.

The boiler incident took place two days prior to New Year’s Day.  I’m called into a meeting the first week in February. This “boiler cease order” meeting took place in the Senior VPs office with my AVP and I physically present, while on speaker phone with the CUNY Central Team.  Some of this gang are knowledgeable while others could stuff all their knowledge in a wet paper bag without fear of the bag losing integrity.  Some folks only have positions at Central Office because they sued the University on things that can’t be proven and would put the university in a bad public light.  Can you say settlement?  Either way I meticulously detail the timeline of events in perfect order with resolutions. Only one character is openly conflicted despite the frequent apologies of my AVP on her failure to communicate.  This character has a remarkably close similarity to a “Sanford and Son” cast member so moving forward we will call her Auntie.

When people with a supremacist ideology are not in control of all incoming and/or outgoing communication they feel threatened as full control over communication is their only power.  They want to give the impression that they are the only authority on a subject unchallenged by any conflicting thoughts.  This is when Auntie demanded to come to campus and “see” for herself what was going on.  Despite her department director asking her the purpose of redundant efforts, she insisted.  I knew exactly what she wanted and knew through her excitement that she was scared.  Scared that the regulatory agency would position itself as the unbiased third party and expose the consistent incompetent neglect.  A deer in headlights indeed.  After this meeting it came to my attention that my VPs were not taking simple communications seriously and were overly comfortable with the Central Office contingent. In my opinion they are missing the point and simultaneously mistaking ops for allies.  This group has not done a single thing to mistake them for an ally.

After 2.5 years of working under this President’s administration I do what I never did or ever intended to do.  I ask for a meeting with the narcissist.  I never fancied being around people that kept bad company.  People that like to associate with clowns must belong in a circus, my personality is way too serious to be mistaken for circus antics.  After watching this treacherous reality show and handpicked casting of horrible actors, somehow I feel that a direct communication to this beta male might allow him the privilege of understanding the common struggles of a Medgar Evers College employee despite his overflowing ignorance and appearance of managerial struggle. My passion for helping the community has defeated my need to avoid his toxicity.  I was terminated the day following my meeting request, without a meeting.

As soon as I was terminated Auntie began reaching out to the DOB Inspector to gain control of the communication.  She also continued her disrespect of all college staff which included the AVP by excluding her from all pertinent communications.  Forcing people to play catch up on communications is an easy way to make them seem uninformed, disinterested or incompetent.  It is a dirty game especially in the public sector.  Auntie and the Central Office mechanical engineer offer the Inspector the AVP job at the college.  But wait, there’s someone in the position currently.  And moreover it’s illegal to bribe an inspector!  As per the New York City Department of Investigations, you cannot offer food, trips, tips, products, or compensation to a public service inspector with hopes of changing his original agenda of engagement.  Somehow offering full time job (they also denounce a part time job because even the DOI wouldn’t think someone would be so reckless and devious to offer a full time job with benefits, specifically) must also be a bribe.  Just an extreme scope of the bribe options but a clear bribe nonetheless.  There’s no way around it.  To compound it, check the system and see what happened to the violation and how the matter was resolved.  In typical supremacist fashion.

It’s the responsibility of the inspector to announce the bribe to the agency as per NYC DOI.  Reason being is to prevent these types of organizations from continuing the poor integrity and immorality of BRIBERY!  The Inspector failed to secure public trust by not reporting the bribe to the Department of Buildings or Department of Investigations.  If we are keeping score, this inspector had two opportunities to thwart the conduct.  This offering and accepting puts the Inspector in the guilty position that was solely reserved for the offeror of the bribe.  Now all parties are equally guilty!  This is very easy and simple for the CUNY Inspector General to figure out.  Easy.  Step one, identify the Inspector being engaged in an ongoing investigation at the location.  Step two, look at the Human Resources hiring timeline which is easy to obtain along with the salary at both places.  You will see a $75,000 increase at the CUNY employer compared to the DOB Inspector position.  Step 3, what does the separation paperwork look like for the AVP that was already seated in the position at the college?  Never resigned, and was not terminated.  She was told by the senior VP not to return on a specific date and a new job would made available to her at Central Office.  Despite witnessing several distinct acts of poor integrity she trusted and believed them.  Step 4, what is the status of every cease to operate notice on the boilers at the college?  What inspector and what dates were the boilers inspected and placed back into service?  Please keep in mind the integrity of the college executive administrators and the former DOB Inspector (who became the new college AVP after accepting the bribe) is below substandard and benefit of the doubt should not exist to any of them.

The college engineering staff already knew this DOB Inspector as he was a groomsman in the wedding we attended for one of our engineers.  The inspector met over drinks with a few engineers and detailed what was being offered to him and the subsequent meetings with Auntie, the CUNY mechanical engineer, the Senior VP and the President for employment while an active investigation was ongoing, repeat, while he was involved in an active investigation he was approached by CUNY Central AND college executive administrative staff and bribed!  He did not report the bribe offer AND accepted it.  CUNY IG you’re welcome!
